Silver Fork, located just off of I-40 in Morganton, NC, at 1200 feet in elevation, is a great winery with fantastic views of the southern Blue Ridge Mountains (known as the South Mountains). The wines are good to excellent, if a little on the pricey side. The wedding pavilion makes this a great wedding venue, regardless of weather or time of year. Located just off of I-40, midway between Statesville and Winston-Salem (in Mocksville, NC), is RayLen, a great winery started by Joe and Joyce Neely, with excellent wines. You enter through gently rolling hills of vines until you see the large villa building, where tastings are conducted, and a 4,000 square foot covered pavilion, which is a great setting for weddings and events. This is the largest family owned winery in North Carolina, and perhaps the largest vineyard on the east coast, located just off I-77 in the Yadkin Valley. The vineyards you drive through are extensive, and then you arrive at a beautiful, serene setting, with a creek and a lake meandering through the property. Also present is the Harvest Grill (an excellent full-service restaurant), a separate wine tasting and shopping building, and an additional venue for concerts, weddings, and other special occasions. Biltmore Winery is the most visited winery in America. Biltmore is located on the grounds of the famous Biltmore House in Asheville, North Carolina, built by George Vanderbilt in the late 1800’s, which today is the largest privately owned house in the country. The winery is located on the grounds of the estate, a couple of miles from the iconic House, in the Antler Village, which is a neat collection of restaurants and wine tasting areas. The beautiful stonework and iron gate entrance tells you that the details of this winery have been well thought out. Starting with the rolling green vineyards, the road climbs to the large stone villa, which feels like the classic wineries of Napa and Sonoma. St. Paul is located not far off of I-26 just outside of Hendersonville, NC. They have a second wine tasting location in Flat Rock, NC, nearby. Round Peak Vineyards is located near the intersection of I-77 and I-74, near Mount Airy, NC. The vineyard is located in a somewhat flat plateau, with great views of Round Peak and other mountains of the Blue Ridge from the expansive patio. This winery has an 18 hole disk-golf course, which is free of charge to play. Jones von Drehle is located about 20 minutes northwest of Elkin, NC and I-77. Old North State is located on Main Street in the heart of downtown Mount Airy, in what used to be a hardware store dating to 1890. Located just under 15 minutes from Lumberton, NC, and US 74, Cypress Bend Vineyards is a rare Scotland County/Sandhills winery. They grow several varieties of sweet grapes on the property, and produce a couple of good dry wines, with grapes from the Yadkin Valley. JOLO is located in Pilot Mountain, near Mount Airy, north of Winston-Salem. It was established in 2010, on a beautiful piece of property, which views Pilot Mountain. On the property, just behind the tasting room, Big Elkin Creek and Grassy Creek meet, and there sits the century old Elkin Creek Mill. The winery is a pleasant and scenic spot, like a park with swinging benches, and lots of water and woods. While there is a part of the vineyard at the front of the tasting building, the focus of the scenery is not the grape vines, as it is at many other vineyards, but the natural setting. A fun, farm/country feeling experience. The tasting buildings are surrounded on three sides by extensive vineyards, some of which extend as far as the eye can see. Located several miles east of I-77 in Dobson, NC, Stony Knoll Vineyards is a small but pleasant winery. A modern tasting building overlooks the rolling hills of the vineyard, providing a nice view. Owned by Van & Kathy Coe, it is a North Carolina Century Farm, meaning that the land has been farmed continuously for more than 100 years, with a historic wine lodge on the property that you can rent. The property is located just off of U.S. 21, 15 minutes north of Elkin, North Carolina, near Stone Mountain. The winery sits high on a hill. While approaching the property, you realize that in front of you is not a grape vineyard, but an apple orchard. Adagio is a musical term which means “slowly with passion.” With this great musical theme, Adagio Vineyards is a different sort of winery. Owned by two dentists, Dr. Tim and Dr. Jan Wahl, Tim handles the winemaking, while Jan makes violins. Windsor Run Cellars is located about an hour north of Uptown Charlotte, right near the intersection of I-77, and US 421. The winery produces fair dry wines, but puts quite an emphasis on distilled spirits, and fortified wines with spirits. As a small family vineyard, Cellar 4201 is owned and cared for by Greg and Donna Hutchins, with five acres of vines. For a very small winery, they grow a decent number of varietals. Read more “Cellar 4201”

Waldensian grows a small amount of sweet grapes on the property. Much of the red grapes are concord grapes, brought in from upstate New York. What they call dry wines are sweet, what they call sweet wine is a sickeningly sugary. The wines all have a heavy, musty, vinegar taste. Read more “Waldensian Heritage Wines”
