Location & Atmosphere:  Round Peak Vineyards is located near the intersection of I-77 and I-74, near Mount Airy, NC. The vineyard is located in a somewhat flat plateau, with great views of Round Peak and other mountains of the Blue Ridge from the expansive patio. This winery has an 18 hole disk-golf course, which is free of charge to play. They have two rental cabins available for rent, and are “dog friendly.” Round Peak offers a line of Skullcap draft and bottled beers which they produce, to expand the offerings, which is almost 50% of the winery.

The Wines:  Round Peak produces a stainless Chardonnay, Viognier, and Traminette on the white side, and a large number of reds, including Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Montepulciano, and Nebbiolo. They have a number of blended whites and reds combining these wines. We rated all of their wines we tasted as very good, but felt that the bottles of wine we bought may not have been as good as what we had tasted. Their sweet and semi-sweet wines are offered under the Skull Camp label, which use European style grapes with a high residual sugar as their sweeter wines, plus a Sangria.

Tastings & Tours:  Round Peaks offered us a tasting of $1 per tasting, pick your own wines from their list. They have now gone to a system of choosing either Taste of France, Varietal Tasting, or Sweet Tasting, which are $9 for 6 wines, including a souvenir glass.

patioEvents/ Shopping/ Other Amenities:  Round Peak has live music roughly once or twice a month from April through September, including a camping evening. Check their calendar for details. There are no winery items to shop for. On our visit, we saw as many people playing the 18 hole disk golf course as there were tasting the wines. The golfers were on average 25 years younger than the wine tasters. With a large number of grills on their patio, we are told they have “bring your own meat” cookouts, which could be quite fun.

Value:  Priced between $17 and $32 per bottle, the wines of Round Peak are very good in quality, and represent a very good value.

Rating:  We were excited about the tremendous view and setting of this winery. For a wedding venue, the open but covered patio would be great in nice weather, but still fine if it rained. This winery is good to very good, and could be excellent given time. We hope that they do not continue to diversify further into beer and other offerings, so that their wine does not improve. With the million dollar view and the great disk golf course, this is a very fun venue for a wedding, or enjoying a glass of wine.
