Top 10 North Carolina Wines
- Ray Len Category 5- a red blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Syrah, Petit Verdot, and Cabernet Franc, all grown on the estate. Fantastic bouquet, and a smooth finish on the nose.
- BurntShirt Reserve Chardonnay- This Chardonnay is smooth, with a touch of oaky flavor, but nicely balanced. California wineries, look out!!!
- Childress Reserve Cabernet- they are phasing out the reserve wines, but if you can still find this, it is a gem! Rich flavors of blackberry and black cherry fill the palate.
- Shelton Estate Chardonnay- a great, simple chardonnay, with a light oak flavor, but with the hint of citrus taste. All of the grapes are grown on the Shelton property in Surrey County. A great wine at a great price.
- Cypress Bend- Riverton- Dry Muscadine. A dry Muscadine? Isn’t that an oxymoron? This tastes like drinking honeysuckle. You won’t believe it. This is something very different!
- Biltmore Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon- a rich, blackberry and plum taste fills the palate. Reasonably priced at $25, this wine is solid!
- Jones von Drehle Steel & Stone Blend- an outstandingly complex wine, 65% Petit Verdot and 35% Cabernet Sauvignon, with the rich flavors of black cherry and moderately oaked, has a long, silky finish.
- SilverFork Nonsense Red Blend- an off-dry, very slightly sweet combination of Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot has an incredibly rich taste of raspberry, smoke, and leather which reaches the palate.
- JoLo- Jolotage Red Blend. A blend of various reds grown on the estate. A rich blackberry bouquet is complimented by an excellent, smooth finish.
- Fish Hippie (Old North State Winery)- Soul Red Blend. A light red blend, with a delightful raspberry taste on the nose, and a very smooth finish.

- Raffaldini- their great tasting villa transports you to Tuscany! Super view of the Blue Ridge Mountains in the distance, great rich Italian wines!
- Biltmore- the Vanderbilt family brought winemaking to North Carolina in the 1970’s. Now, the most visited winery in America, takes wineries to a whole new level. Even if you don’t visit the iconic house, be sure to visit Antler Village, with its great tastings and restaurants!
- Shelton- super concert schedule, beautiful pastoral setting, with a fantastic restaurant, great wines, and a great Hampton Inn right down the street!
- BurntShirt- a surprise of a great winery with wonderful wines, right outside of Hendersonville! Has the best shopping for winery items in the state, with a huge old garage full of everything you need!!!
- Piccione- very similar to Raffaldini, located next door! Great Italian wines, as well as some traditional vinefera wines, with a fabulous view of the Blue Ridge Mountains. Has that California/Tuscan feeling.
- Childress- has an elegant main building, great music schedule, extensive winery with great tours, fantastic restaurant (only open limited times), and great shopping!
- Old North State- feels like you are going to a great pub or restaurant that happens to make its own wine, with great tours of the basement wine making operation. In the heart of downtown Mount Airy. Make this #1 in the state if you are an Andy Griffith fan!!!
- Slightly Askew- tremendous selection of dry, off dry, and sweet wines, located in an old house near downtown Elkin. It feels as though you were invited to an old friend’s house to sample some great wines!
- Jones von Drehle- has a newly built event pavilion, great music schedule, fantastic wines, and a great view.
- Treehouse Vineyards- grows sweet wines, with some Yadkin valley dry wines. Just a fun venue, with great local concerts, food trucks, and the famous treehouses. Their Latin night, a great evening of fun DJ dancing, can’t be beat!
