Location & Atmosphere: Silver Fork, located just off of I-40 in Morganton, NC, at 1200 feet in elevation, is a great winery with fantastic views of the southern Blue Ridge Mountains (known as the South Mountains). The wines are good to excellent, if a little on the pricey side. The wedding pavilion makes this a great wedding venue, regardless of weather or time of year.
The Wines: Silver Fork produces a steel fermented Chardonnay (a good, solid wine), as well as an excellent Chardonnay Reserve, barrel aged in French oak. Their reds include smooth versions of Chambourcin, Cabernet Franc, and Merlot, as well as red blends Four Dog Red, which we rate as very good, and Nonsense Red Blend, which is a delicious Merlot, Cab Franc and Petit Verdot blend, with a long finish.
Events/ Shopping/ Other Amenities: Every Saturday, there is live music, and some activities throughout the year, and food trucks are often found here. There are some decent winery items for sale. However, Silver Fork has a large wedding pavilion building which makes this a great location for weddings, rain or shine.
Tastings: In the pleasant tasting room, wine tastings are available for $9 per person.
Value: Costing between $22 and $29 per bottle, Silver Fork’s wines may be a tad on the pricey side, but we didn’t find a wine here we didn’t like.
Rating: With a million-dollar view of the mountains, a new tasting room, great wines, and plenty of outdoor seating to enjoy the great view, this is clearly a winery to stop and enjoy. Their wedding pavilion (pictured at right) is one of the best we have seen. Even though the wines border on “expensive,” we definitely consider Silver Fork a five-star experience.
