Location & Atmosphere: Linville Falls Winery is located just off of the Blue Ridge Parkway in Linville Falls, NC, near the town of Linville. The vineyard is set on the side of a very scenic steep grade, which funnels down to the large tasting building and large patio, which has a steady stream of live music and entertainment from the end of April through the end of September.
The Wines: About half of the wines offered at Linville Falls are estate grown, the others are from Washington State. Their biggest white dry wines grown on the estate, very good in quality, are in the Riesling family, including Riesling, Dry Riesling, and Late Harvest Riesling. They also grow Seyval Blanc and Vidal Blanc, which are offered in a Mountain White blend. They also have a red blend called Elevation. Their Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Chardonnay are from Washington, because this property is at an elevation 3,200 feet, where many of the traditional varietals cannot grow. They also offer fortified fruit wines made from apples, strawberries, blueberries, etc.
Tastings & Tours: Tastings cost $10 for a taste of seven different wines, which tend to be a combination of dry and off-dry.
Events/ Shopping/ Other Amenities: Linville Falls has a large number of items for sale, including tee shirts and other winery items. They have a full calendar of bands, singers, and dinners, packing in the crowds on weekends. We visited this winery on a weekday in Summer, and it was pretty busy; we visited on a Saturday in fall, and it was packed with people, with a fantastic jazz band (pic. Right). They currently do not offer the property as a wedding venue, but do accept other receptions and events.
Value: Priced between $21 and $60 per bottle, the wines of Linville Falls are very good to excellent in quality, but tend to be a little on the steep side. You cannot purchase wine from them online.
Rating: For a mountain vineyard, they certainly grow a large number of varietals on the estate, which are very good in quality. Their traditional Cab, Merlot and Chardonnay, grown in Washington, but produced and fermented on the property, are solidly very good wines. The beautiful mountain scenery, and fun bands and entertainment, make this a great four-star attraction. Combine this with Grandfather and Linville Falls winery for a wonderful afternoon of wineries.
