Location & Atmosphere: Located in Valdese, North Carolina, 2-3 miles north of I-40.
The Wines: Waldensian grows a small amount of sweet grapes on the property. Much of the red grapes are concord grapes, brought in from upstate New York. What they call dry wines are sweet, what they call sweet wine is a sickeningly sugary. The wines all have a heavy, musty, vinegar taste.
The Tastings: Tastings are held in the ground level of a two-story barn. It is dank and musty. They put two flat screen TV’s in the room, tuned in to sports. Tastings are free, and the wines are $7 per bottle.
Other Amenities: None.
Rating: One star, and that is generous. We appreciate that the Waldensians have a rich religious history, and that they have been producing wine in a dry county since the 1930’s. But the wines are just bad. Skip this winery and go on to Six Waterpots down the road, or drive toward Elkin and the Yadkin Valley wineries.
