Location & Atmosphere: Adagio is a musical term which means “slowly with passion.” With this great musical theme, Adagio Vineyards is a different sort of winery. Owned by two dentists, Dr. Tim and Dr. Jan Wahl, Tim handles the winemaking, while Jan makes violins. The winery is a comfortable, newer building with inviting seating areas, and many custom violins made by Jan.
The Wines: The wines are good to very good, but stay shy of being excellent. Being a newer winery, we hope to see their wines continue to improve. Their Chardonnay is solid, and many of their blended wines have names that play off of the musical theme, such as Vivace, Harmony, Minuet, and Coda.
Tastings/Tours: Tastings are $9 for 7 wines, which includes the stemless engraved glass. The actual vineyards are about one mile from the tasting building, but they have planted grapes in the immediate front area to create set the right tone. Overall there are interesting violins, and a whole area of the room dedicated to violin making, which provided a nice blend of wine and music.
Other Amenities: Adagio has some great shopping ideas, and a number of wine-oriented products for sale, including aprons, plaques, tee shirts, food items, and more. There were two small but nice seating areas inside the building for enjoying a glass of wine, and a large fireplace for cooler weather. However, we didn’t notice any outdoor areas for wine drinking.
Rating: Adagio Vineyards is a newer vineyard which shows promise at improvement in great winemaking, and provides an interesting insight into its owners real passions: music and violin making, and growing grapes and producing wonderful wine. This is a solid three star “performance” which should mature into higher ratings in the near future. The addition of more amenities on the property would also help to make this a great winery experience.
